The Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood and Family Studies (ECFS) at the University of Washington’s College of Education prepares students for careers in early learning, childcare, education policy, family support, and social/mental health services. The program integrates perspectives across child development, curriculum design, family engagement, social policy, and research. Graduates will be equipped for direct service, policy, advocacy, and graduate studies in education or related fields. Students can follow general or Teaching & Learning pathways to tailor their preparation for work in preschools or as preparation for a master's in teaching. Core required courses include ECFS 200 (Introduction to ECFS), ECFS 301 (Early Childhood Curriculum), ECFS 400 (Child Observation and Assessment), and several others focused on family and community engagement, curriculum, and child development.
