The Bachelor of Science in Marine Vertebrate Biology at Stony Brook University's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences gives students a robust background in basic biology with special focus on marine vertebrate species such as fish, sharks, birds, turtles, and marine mammals. Compared to the general Marine Sciences degree, the curriculum provides a more intensive foundation in zoology and marine biology. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in research projects and internships, benefiting from field and laboratory courses offered at the main campus and the Stony Brook Southampton field station. Career pathways include research, education, work with governmental or non-profit organizations, and preparation for graduate study, veterinary, medical, or science teaching programs. The program requires approximately 68 credits, including foundational science courses, a zoology and marine vertebrate core, marine biology electives, and fulfillment of an upper-division writing requirement.
