The MA in Political Science at Yale is not available as a stand-alone or direct-admit program. It is granted only to students who withdraw from the PhD program after successfully completing a full year of coursework (at least seven term courses, with an average of High Pass), and meeting distribution and field requirements. The curriculum spans five substantive fields—political theory, international relations, comparative politics, American politics, and political economy—as well as three methods fields. Emphasis is placed on exposure to foundational and modern research, with courses including Introduction to Politics and a focused Research and Writing sequence. Students are trained for academic, governmental, and non-governmental careers where analytical skills in the principles and practicalities of political science are essential.
