The MA in Musicology at Dalhousie University (Faculty of Arts and Social Science, Fountain School of Performing Arts) is a thesis-based research graduate program. It allows students to investigate music’s role and meaning in various social and historical contexts through text-based analysis informed by cultural studies. The program is small, offering high levels of specialized attention and flexibility to tailor coursework to student interests. The structure involves two required seminars, three elective seminars in musicology, a thesis prospectus, and independent research culminating in a thesis. Proficiency in a foreign language (usually German or French) is required before graduation, either via coursework or examination. Students are eligible for scholarships and teaching assistantships.
