The Honours Bachelor of Arts with Specialist in Visual Studies: Critical Practices Stream at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, University of Toronto is an undergraduate program focusing on the critical, theoretical, and interdisciplinary dimensions of visual culture. The Critical Practices stream is designed for students interested in careers as critics, curators, publishers, journalists, editors, teachers, and research-based practitioners, rather than traditional studio artists. The curriculum integrates contemporary art history, theory, critical writing, curatorial practice, and cultural analysis. A capstone thesis project in the fourth year involves independent research, writing, publishing, and participation in a year-end group exhibition where students present their work for public and academic review. Students learn to analyze, document, interpret, and reimagine visual culture through rigorous inquiry, dialogue, and engagement with collective memory and archives.
